Horace Mann teacher and Holocaust
Educator Educator Sandy Rubenstein joined us to talk about her father’s survival and his memoir, Mark It with a Stone. Joseph Horn (1926-99) grew up in Radom, Poland, and on the day he was supposed to start 7th grade, the German army invaded Poland.
He survived the camps Blizyn and Auschwitz, and married in 1949. In 1973 he testified against a Nazi commandant in a war crimes trial in Hamburg, Germany, resulting in the commandant’s sentence to life in prison. Horn shared his story on film with Steven Spielberg and The Shoah Foundation in 1995, a year before his book was published. Ms. Rubenstein kindly donated a copy of Mark It with a Stone to the PAS library, so her and father’s teachings may continue within our community.
